As the Post Carbon Institute points out, fossil fuels have powered human growth and ingenuity for centuries. Now that we’re reaching the end of cheap and abundant oil and coal supplies, we’re in for an exciting ride, the institute says. While there’s a real risk that we’ll fall off a cliff, there’s still time to control our transition to a post-carbon future.

The following videos offer a brief insight into the history of our growing dependence on fossil fuels and question what we can do to transition to renewable and more sustainable forms of energy and resources.

This will not be easy. Fossil fuels and their bi-products have allowed man to rapidly grow in number, and so-called sustainable or renewable resources also have their cost. But as the institute points out, we may carry on and hit a wall and be forced to change, or we can consciously plan for a “post-carbon” future. It is up to us.
